An evening of great live music from:
Alan Frew is an acoustic singer/songwriter form the seaside town of Troon in Ayrshire, Scotland. His music has been described as melodic indie/folk, sometimes melancholy but uplifting with sparkling variation and depth of emotion. Citing his father Ian Frew as his main influence, Alan came from a musical family with a blues background and played his first gig at a school concert. His music has been compared to that of Nick drake, John Martyn and more recently Kings of Convenience and Iron and Wine.
His debut album, Go Easy, was released on iTunes in 2010 and was well received by the major press and UK radio stations. After having toured the UK, Germany and Holland playing at many major Festivals throughout the country, Alan released a brand new single in December last year called Mary Go which is available on his website. He is also working on a new album with fellow friend Mark Rafferty of 'The Rafferty Family' which is due for release in July 2013.
"Troon troubadour Alan’s debut is a gentle gem. He has a bit of the Elliot Smiths about him on his more refl ective moments, then when he really picks his guitar, it’s Nick Drake and Newton Faulkner who are his benchmarks." - David Esson, SUNDAY EXPRESS
"The Ayrshire-based singer/songwriter's album is gentle and uplifting. Go Easy has gentle guitar strumming. Female backing vocalists deserve a mention and former Speedway singer Jill Jackson shines on Denise. A laid-back folk/pop album that's worth checking out. ( Pick of the week )" - Avril Cadden, SUNDAY MAIL
Although best known as an author, with books such as ‘Your Face Here-British Cult Movies Since The 1960’s’, & the acclaimed biographies ‘Coming Down Fast’ and "Butterfly On A Wheel", Simon Wells' music occupies a quieter vein. His first collection entitled ‘Sometimes In The Morning’, is pastoral, melodic, quirky & reflective of the English countryside where it was written & recorded. Featuring 13 tracks, with acoustic guitar & acoustic rhythm section, Simon’s own compositions have the feel of The Pentangle, Nick Drake & early Traffic, making this album an instant entry into the classic work of that genre. With sleeve notes by Paolo Hewitt, this is one of the most exciting additions to the largely overlooked library of English pastoral folk for decades.
Simon is currently recording his yet untitled second album.
“A very impressive new album” - Gary Crowley. BBC Radio London
